We see a barrier-free society where wheelchair users can fully participate in all aspects of life.
The Association of Wheelchair Users of Namibia (AWCU) is a non-profit organisation established in January 2016. Led by and for people with disabilities, we are committed to ensuring that every wheelchair user in Namibia can live with dignity, autonomy, and full participation in society.
With active representation in the Khomas, Erongo, and Kavango East and West regions, we aim to expand our reach to serve individuals, families, caregivers, and communities nationwide.
The following data is taken from membership satisfaction with the different services and programs.

Empowering wheelchair users, advocating for their rights, and fostering for the creation of a society in which wheelchair users can participate fully without barriers.
AWCU originated as a grassroots initiative led by wheelchair users who recognised the urgent need for representation, support, and systemic change. Since then, we’ve grown into a national platform that has impacted over 500 lives through training, advocacy, and community engagement.
We believe that change starts with those most affected, and that together, we can build a barrier-free Namibia.
AWCU was born out of the Workshop 4 Wheels initiative, when wheelchair users came together to create a platform led by and for persons with disabilities. This marked the beginning of a movement for dignity, autonomy, and inclusion.
AWCU adopted the first draft of our Constitution, affirming that we are led by and for persons with disabilities. It set out our mission, values, and commitment to ensuring that wheelchair users’ voices would guide every decision.
We launched our first public awareness campaigns, challenging stigma and calling for driver's licences for people with disabilities. These efforts gave wheelchair users a stronger collective voice.
We began hosting monthly peer support groups, creating safe spaces for wheelchair users and caregivers to share experiences, build resilience, and strengthen community bonds.
We collaborate with local and international organisations, including the National Disability Council of Namibia, to amplify our impact and ensure sustainable change.
The AWCU board is composed of seven members, all of whom are individuals with disabilities, as outlined below: Our leadership comprises wheelchair users, caregivers, and allies with lived experience and professional expertise in disability rights, social work, disability theology, and inclusive design.
AWCU is a non-profit organisation initiated in January 2016. We are dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities, specifically wheelchair users, their families, and stakeholders.
